I heard there was another thread on this topic recently, but for the
life of me, I couldn't find it despite my searching, so if someone wants
to find a previous post and reply to it, I'll start posting on that
thread instead of this new one.

Anyhow, I'm working on a project now that would be greatly benefited by
having an API for specifying the mappings (instead of it being XML-based
like it is now).

I understand from Ayende that there has been some efforts on this front
and so I wanted to find out where things are and how I can help out to
bring it to completion.
